Since 2017, UNO has partnered with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the University of Innsbruck in Austria to conduct excavations to recover and identify the remains of missing American air crew from World War II in Central Europe. The first of these projects resulted in the recovery of the remains of Captain Lawrence Dickson, a Tuskegee Airman, and his reburial in Arlington National Cemetery.
In our latest project with DPAA, we also partnered with the Task Force Dagger Foundation, a non-profit serving Special Operations veterans, to excavate the site of a B-17 crash in Germany during Summer 2019. We are honored to continue this collaboration, made possible through the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School, which provides the framework and expertise for our students to participate in summer field schools on these projects (https://www.uno.edu/innsbruck).
In Summer 2021, we hope to be doing something a little different: partnering with our colleague Dr. Harald Stadler at the University of Innsbruck to excavate at the site of Trautson Castle in Matrei-am-Brenner.
We’ll soon be accepting applications for students to go with us. Contact Dr. Gray for more details, or visit our Innsbruck Summer Study page for more information:
