Since 2017, the University of New Orleans has collaborated with the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and with the University of Innsbruck in Austria to lead joint efforts to excavate the sites of World War II aircraft crashes, in the hopes that the excavations will help the DPAA to identify and return the remains missing aircrew home for burial. The effort includes archaeologists and forensic specialists from the U.S. and Austria, graduate and undergraduate students, historians and museum professionals, as well as additional support and expertise from external partners.
